FREEDOM looks good, plus “Hi-YAHHH” and other ramblings…

I’d never looked forward to a Tuesday in my life.
Until this past week. It was a GIRLS DAY OUT- (margaritas & baby talk, anyone?), all for a little FREEDOM… The Free to Succeed Tour with David Jay, Photographer-Entrepreneur, and LIFE-COACH, extraorldinnare! My photog buddies and I headed up to Charlotte to get a glimpse of life in the FAB lane.. and it was a blast! We finally got some hands-on time with Couture Book and their samples… MAN… those are some GORGEOUS books… So many choices.. it’s kind of like shoe shopping! I’m seriously thinking about adding this line to my available albums… what do you think? Go check them out- but I’m telling you- the online site doesn’t do them justice! DJ explained how to streamline our workflow to make our clients happy, yet have enough time left over to keep ourselves & our families happy. This seminar couldn’t have come at a better time since I struggled so long with announcing my new business hours (even though it’s been working out better than expected)!
We learned some tips on Adobe Lightroom, which is what I edit in (and I LOVE it)… if you’re a photographer and haven’t gotten this, you are wasting too much time on editing! We also got some preaching on “be unique”, which… um… has been my passion in life ever since I was born- thank you mama! We had a great night meeting some new friends, and I wish we could have stayed longer & gotten some shots of DJ’s gorgeous girlie girl, Allie, and friends Kenny Kim & Shyla Dalirifar, but we had babies at home so we had to haul tail back! **DJ, Thanks so much for being so awesome!***
Here we are before it all started- from L-R is Marian Loftis, MEEE, Jana Candler (I’m so jealous, she hogged him all night- just kidding!), DJ, Lisa Carpenter, and Amanda Eller!

Marian looking not-too-happy that I’m shooting her in mid-sentence:)

We were cool enough to sit on the front row so I snapped this quickie of DJ, as he caused light bulbs to go off in our heads:

In other news…
I decided to give into Taelor’s begging & pleading & put her in TaeKwanDo. When I was her age (actualy younger than her), I was in full swing in clogging lessons. Yes, I clogged my whole life - and I was quite awesome if I do say so myself… but after many attempts to get her to take any form of dance, she refused, and continued to carry on with her tomboy personality.. so I took her and she LOVES it. I’ve never seen her so happy! I think it’s actually a GREAT fit for her.. She’s having fun and learning some valuable pointers in case she ever has to whoop some a$$. Additionally as far as lessons go, my husband is going to kill me, but his little random birthday gift certificate to me for ballroom dance lessons has actually turned into one of our favorite things! We’ve been taking for a few months now, concentrating on Salsa, Rhumba, and Tango- that being our most favorite, and what we’re best at- go figure. If any of you are interested in taking an intro class or two, please let me know, as we will get a free lesson if anyone mentions our names:)

Anyway, back to Taelor & TaeKwanDo.
I decided to bring along my camera yesterday to one of her classes - you know, to show you all how fierce and terrifying this girl is when she’s in action… whoah. So I picked up my camera, and headed for the door, and this is what I saw staring back at me, as I usually see staring back at me about 18 hours of the day:

Yes, his hair is really that long and curly. It’s just a big fluff of white blonde curls. I love it so much, no matter how un-groomed he looks. And yes, he cries almost all day long:) Ahhh…. so much more of it to come. He’s actually turning 1 year old this month!!! Can you believe it? It seems like yesterday I was waddling, bending, stretching, and rolling around with my huge belly at weddings & shoots, and now here he is, almost a year old. Man time flies.

Here is Taelor, fresh and in her gi (pronnounced with the “g” as in “game” and a long e sound: “gee”). It’s so funny because I always call it a “G” (as in the letter itself). She looks like she’s a high black belt by this arrogant smirk on her face. Like she’s daring you to come TRY to take her down.

And here we are at class.. she kept looking back at me so much I was afraid they were going to tell me to put the camera away… but they didn’t. She eventually started paying attention. I’m so excited to see her move up in ranks as she gets older! Supposedly it will take her about 2 years to become a black belt.

That’s all for now- I’m off to bed for the 2nd half of Anna & Roc’s wedding tomorrow!

Celine + Chris: Hitched!

My two new best friends finally tied the knot! I’ve only known these two a little over a year, but I feel like I’ve known them forever. So funny and so down to earth, I am going to miss our time together, but maybe one day in the future I’ll see them again when they have kids!
There was a “C” theme throughout the day via their names, Celine + Chris Chumbley, and let’s not forget they are MAJOR fans & alums of CLEMSON! Even the tiger showed up to kick off the reception- gotta love that! I also love that they named the tables after locations that were special to them. So clever! We also did some wedding party shots around campus, and we couldn’t miss the tiger paw hole on the golf course! The speeches given by the Maid of Honor and Chris’ dad were very moving, and the night continued with a father-daughter-AND-mother dance, also a Chris and his mom had us rolling with a mix of the Pee Wee Herman dance!
Micki and I truly had a blast, and we couldn’t stop laughing about all the hilarious moments on the drive back home. Thank you so much to Celine & Chris- you two have such a special place in my heart, and I wish you all the best in your JOURNEY through life (nice segway to the slideshow song, I say:)

Celine: Stunning Bridals

Now that Celine + Chris are married, I can now show you some of my favorites from her bridal session! I really loved her choice of “urban art”… she was very laid back and her portraits revealed her casual and unique personality!

New Contest! Win Tickets to a FABULOUS Wedding Event!

This contest is for any bride (or groom) who has just recently gotten engaged (lucky you!), whose wedding isn’t until 2009, or if you don’t have a lot of stuff finalized yet. The reason for this is because I have tickets to give away to a WONDERFUL wedding event that’s taking place Thursday night, October 16. It’s called Style Down the Aisle and it’s being hosted by Angie Miller of GSPBridalNetwork.com! The event is going to be truly like no other wedding show you’ve ever been to. Instead of being herded in, with hundreds of vendors jerking you over to their booths, throwing stacks of flyers at you, and yelling at you,”Hey! Have you booked your caterer yet?” there are a handful of vendors, each from various industries, and they will all be on hand to talk to you and answer questions you’ve always wanted to ask, but always felt rushed or intimidated to at other shows.

There is going to be several fashion shows, slideshows by vendors, and individual vendor intorduction on stage - so you can actually SEE the faces behind the names, and meet them in person. There will be a silent auction, prize drawings, heavy Hors d’œuvres, cocktails, all in an intimate setting, where you will have a great night learning about creative aspects of planning your dream wedding!

(click for a bigger version)

CONTEST RULES: Since I have 2 tickets (each a $25 value), the winner can be a couple, or (2) separate brides - just depends on who wins. I want to see the most creative picture (drawing, magazine collage, poster, photograph, WHATEVER) of your dream wedding & how important it is to you. This could include your dream dress, your colors, flowers, dream cake, dream photographer (hint-hint-ha ha, jk), and above all, it MUST INCLUDE A PICTURE OF YOU AND YOUR FIANCE), along with a few sentences about why you should win. I will select 4 finalists, and post their entries on here so readers can vote. The top 2 winners, or top couple wins 2 tickets to the Style Down the Aisle Show, plus a romantic dinner for two.

THE DEADLINE FOR ALL ENTRIES IS FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 12 @ 11:59pm!!!

Be sure to tell ALL of your friends who have just gotten engaged, or who will soon be engaged! Remember! Contestants must be very early in the planning stages, otherwise, the show won’t benefit them at all:)

So let’s see how creative you can be! And GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

Rebecca + Kirby: Hooked!

Of all the times I preach to everyone that they shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, I took a dose of my own medicine yesterday. I met up with Rebecca and Kirby for their engagement session, and quickly learned my lesson. When they first came by to meet with me about photographing their upcoming wedding in October, I continuously asked the quiet duo if they had any questions, anything to say at all. Beuler? They just looked at each other and quietly said “no.” After they left, I was certain they weren’t interested in hiring me. Low and behold, I was wrong. They hired me, and they instantly turned into the PERFECT clients and rockstar models in front of the camera! The chemistry between this gorgeous couple is amazing - I asked them how long they had been dating. 4 years…. WAIT.. 4 YEARS? I told them they acted like they had been dating 2 weeks. See for yourself!
*post-production note: Although I love and admire so many photographers kicking it with the textured/faded/vintage look, I’ve never had the chance to play around with them on my own pictures until now, so please forgive me if I did it wrong, but I like the effect I got with some of these! Be sure to check out their slideshow and leave them some LUV!

The McKain’s get TRASHED!

I posted a few teasers on this a few days ago, but I wanted to post some more seeing as how I had SO MUCH FUN on this shoot! You can truly see that this couple has it all- the laughs, (the DANCE MOVES), and true romance! Congrats you two! I seriously think I need to move to PA so I can fit in! ha ha!

Jen + Dave: Hitched!

So after combing through I-don’t-want-to-tell-you-how-many pictures Carol + I took on the popular 8-8-08 wedding of Jen + Dave, I finally forced myself to narrow down to a mere 1200 final images (I can’t help it - there was a LOT going on and I wanted to get it ALL)!- it’s the effect of great wedding planning, done ever-so well considering the wedding was in Myrtle Beach, and they live in Pittsburgh, PA!
The wedding took place at my childhood’s favorite hotel- The Crown Reef Resort (the big purple one, if you need a visual), and the reception was right across the street at the convention center. The weather was perfect, the flowers (by Dandelion Limited) & cake (by Croissants Bakery & Cafe) were gorgeous, and the party was non-stop thanks to DJ Jeff Benton, AND the man of the hour himself, Dave (you will see what I mean below). My jaw was hanging to the ground all night- I had no idea that a white boy could dance so well! Whoo hoo! I’m sorry there are so many individual pics… I had a lot of favorites! Be sure to check out the slideshow below all of them, and leave some blog love! I’ll be posting more pics from their newlywed session coming up soon!

::::We interrupt this blog to bring you a very special anouncement:::::

This blog post is coming at a very hectic time for me. I’m buried in work- contracts, meetings, sessions, editing, ordering albums, etc. BUT I HAD to take this time out and post a very special message to EVERYONE- past, current, and future clients, family members of clients, MY family members, other photographers, and blog stalkers. I will be sending out a mass email to all of these people to make sure EVERYONE reads it. Please read all of this, and please know that this message comes from within my heart.
The majority of you know me, from what you’ve heard or read on my site or blog, and obviously from those of you who have met me in person. I am a wife, a mother of 2 fabulous children, an 8 year old girl, Taelor, and an almost-11-month-old son named Evan. I often hear others ask me “how do you DO it all? Run your business, do all the post-work, AND have time for your family?”
The truth is, I don’t. And I haven’t for a long time now.
See, I’ve always wanted to be a photographer. Even though I did odd jobs while growing up and finishing up school, I ALWAYS did it on the side, in hopes of being able to do it full time. One day, I finally took that jump and haven’t looked back since. And it’s been GREAT! I have been so blessed beyond measure with the leaps and bounds this business has made. God has been great in my life and has truly allowed me to do what I love so much and make a living at it, all the while letting me inspire other photographers and making all of my clients happy.
But, in the midst of my business growing at such a fast pace and it being such a happy time for me, it has also been one of the worst. I have completely lost touch with my family- my husband and kids the most. Although I am fortunate to work from home, I don’t get the opportunity to just sit back and hang out with them. I’m always waiting until Evan takes a nap, or Taelor goes to her room, anything so I can get back to WORK! I had to go out of town to shoot a wedding this weekend just to be able to have 5 hours to myself and go watch a MOVIE in the theater! And all the while, I was afraid my clients would be mad at me for taking some personal time to just CHILL! How bogus and insane is that? It shouldn’t be this way! I just wanted my clients to know that above and beyond all, that I would be here for them, to answer any questions, day or night. And it’s that attitude that’s actually done more harm than good, on both sides of the fence. On my family-side, my daughter Taelor is going to be 18 before I blink, and I do NOT want to miss such important moments of her growing up. She always wants to go do stuff, and I’m always putting her off… (”Just a few more minutes, and I’ll be done”…-)- of course, a few more minutes turns into a few more hours, and then it’s too late. I don’t want the same thing to happen with the YEARS rolling by. I finally signed her up for martial arts classes, something she’s always wanted to take, and that is going to affect my availability for sessions and meetings, but so be it. If my clients want to hire me, they will respect that. Secondly, on the business-side, it’s always good to be available to your clients, but what I’ve learned now is that it’s best to keep some structure, so everyone remembers that you are running a BUSINESS, not a 24 hour cafe. I even set up my email so it goes directly to my phone, so I wont’ miss any important info, inquiries, or questions. I typically like to use email as my preferred method of communication, because to be honest, no one wants to hear a baby crying in the background when they call me, and Evan does that a LOT:) BUT, that has impacted what I considered my “free time” (i.e., dinner out with my family, date night with my husband, even my VACATION from a couple of weeks ago).. and I end up checking my phone more than talking to my friends and family. It’s not fair to them that I stay glued to my clients, and it’s not fair to me, either. It affects so much in my life- my relationships, my attitude, and even my health (I’m sick as I’m typing this now)… So, as of today, I’m officially setting some business hours, effective immediately. They are as follows:

MONDAY: CLOSED
TUESDAY-FRIDAY: 9am-6pm (Reserved for client meetings and lifestyle sessions)
SATURDAY: Reserved for Weddings only
SUNDAY: CLOSED

(Kinda like hairtylists’ hours, if you think about it:) Everyone’s used to that, right?:)

***This means that unless there are previous meetings/sessions/etc scheduled already, I will not schedule any meetings, sessions, etc, nor return any phone calls or emails outside of these specified times. So if you email me on Friday after 6pm, please don’t expect a response until Tuesday after 9am******
I also encourage you to bookmark this blog or subscribe to it to ensure you aren’t left out in the dark when I make any future announcements. I post all updates and news here!:)

I hope that you all understand that this is a necessity, both for me as a photographer to perform well and be the most relaxed and refreshed and recharged for my sessions & weddings, (which is also why I only shoot a limited number of weddings per year, so I can guarantee the best customer service and quality images for my clients)….AND for being an important part in my family’s lives. I am only human, and I can’t run around like a robot going non-stop, the way that I have been for the past couple of years! It catches up with me!
I certainly appreciate your understanding!

Busy-Busy!

Once I returned home from my vacation, my business didn’t stop for one second. I had a boudoir session, followed by 2 bridals, and then I took off to the beach for Jenn & Dave’s fabulous 8-8-08 wedding, where my sister Carol second shot with me, followed by their newlywed/trash session the next morning (at 6:30 AM, no doubt)… then later that Saturday, I second shot with Carol for Anna & Kirby’s gorgeous wedding. I have been non-stop editing since I got home, but GUESS WHAT?? I gotta go BACK down to the beach this weekend to shoot another wedding! (but this time, I get the house all to myself– what will I do?)….
Anyway, since I can’t post any of the boudoir or bridal sessions I shot last week (because none of them have gotten married yet and their fiance’s are rumored to be blog and web stalkers of mine)… and also since I’m still in the middle of editing Jenn and Dave’s wedding, I wanted to at LEAST post some teasers from their newlywed session we had on Saturday morning…… my jaw drops everytime I look at these…. stunning. gorgeous. passionate. WOW.
love them. Tell me what you think? Be sure to leave some blog love! Jenn & Dave are on their honeymoon in Mexico right now (I’m jealous), but I’m sure they’ll love to see these when they get back! I’ll be posting the rest of my faves from their wedding & more from their hot steamy newlywed session later this week!
Now, on to the love fest!
